Rotary Bowelscan 2010 started on 1 March.
Your chances of early detection
– and simple, effective treatment
– improve the more regularly you screen yourself.
That’s why Rotary Bowelscan happens every March
– so that West Australians like you get into
the healthy habit of screening every year.
Of last year’s positive Bowelscan tests, 17 led to the
discovery of potentially pre-cancerous polyps in the bowel,
which could be easily and successfully removed.
This March, $8 Rotary Bowelscan test kits will be available
at even more pharmacies around WA,
making it that much easier for people to take part.
Please, do get yourself another kit,
and make sure you use it and return it to your pharmacy by April 14.

Ambassadorial Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947.

Since then, nearly 38,000 men and women from about 100 nations

have studied abroad under its auspices

Today it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program

is to further international understanding

and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas.

The program sponsors several types of scholarships

for undergraduate and graduate students

as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies.

While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors

to the host country and give presentations about their homelands

to Rotary clubs and other groups.

Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians

and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.

Rotarians against Malaria

Malaria kills a child every 30 seconds.
Malaria is a disease of the blood that is caused by a parasite transmitted

from person to person by certain types of mosquitoes.
Worldwide, it causes around 350 to 500 million illnesses

and more than one million deaths annually;

in Africa alone it kills a child every 30 seconds.
Children who survive may suffer from learning impairments or brain damage.

Pregnant women and their unborn children

are also particularly vulnerable to malaria,

which, during pregnancy, is a major cause of mortality, low birth weight

and maternal anemia.

And while we know malaria is preventable, the lack of resources,

coupled with a climate very hospitable to the deadliest strain of malaria,

has made the disease a leading cause of death in

areas such as the Pacific Region, Asia and Africa.
In addition to the human toll malaria exacts,

the economic and social impacts are also devastating.

Moreover, malaria disproportionately affects the rural poor

who can neither afford a bed net for prevention,

nor access appropriate treatment when they fall sick.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises 25 April (Anzac Day)

as World Malaria Day.

RAM believes that we should also develop this concept

as an opportunity to promote what Rotary in Australia

is doing about this devastating disease.
We have selected 30 April as the date on which due recognition should occur.

We have named this day in Australia, Malaria Awareness Day.

However, we intend that the awareness campaign will

occur mostly during the whole of the week commencing 26 April.
To ensure success we encourage clubs to get involved

in whatever manner they choose.

The key element is public awareness of this dreadful disease.

No doubt many Rotarians read the 'West Australian'

over the Christmas holiday break and saw the three articles

over three separate days about what Western Australian Rotarians

are doing in Cambodia.

The Rotary Club of Rossmoyne has asked the WA Rotary Team

who visited Cambodia and were the subject of these articles

to meet together and give a presentation about their involvement

and experiences during the trip in December last year.

A special power point presentation has been prepared.

The presentation will take place on the 17th March at the RAAF function centre

Bull Creek Drive in Bull Creek. 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start.

The President, Directors and the members of the Rotary Club of Rossmoyne

to come along and enjoy what will be a unique experience.

Club Presidents and Rotarians

Information to all Swap Meet/ Market Stall Convenors

It has been brought to our attention that medical equipment

has been sold through car boot sales in the metropolitan area.
The items are clearly marked for single use only

and in some cases it is obvious they have been previously used.

As it is not possible to determine whether sterilisation of the items has occurred,

the risk to the public is unknown, on sale of these items is clearly not appropriate.
No indication of the source of these has been established

and the vendors would not give details.

The WA Health Clinical and Related Waste Policy (C&RW Policy)

requires facilities to be aware of and responsible for the management

of wastes such as these until their final appropriate disposal .

Please forward this to others, including organisers of such sale events,

who may need to be made aware that practices such as this are not acceptable.

Rotary Club of Geraldton

To the Geraldton Rotary club,
I’m terribly sorry that I could not be here in person to talk to you

about the amazing experience of RYLA 2010

but I’m now a country girl living in the city!
Your club sponsored both myself and Chris,

who I had already known for some time which gave me a little bit of relief,

although when I got to Kings Park he was in the restaurant

having breakfast while I stood outside by myself!
We began by meeting each other and doing “ice breakers”

allowing the group to know one another.

We were separated into 3 groups for the week, with about 7 people in each.

The ages ranged from 18 (me being the youngest) to 24.

Throughout the week we did orienteering, raft building,

high and low ropes courses, hiking, abseiling

and recreation each morning at 7am!-just to name a few activities.

We also had lectures about public speaking, leadership skills,

cultural awareness and people talking to us about their amazing achievements in life;

David Dix spoke about being the youngest person to sail solo around the world.
Each activity and speech allowed us to push ourselves in

different ways to obtain new skills, experiences and overcome fears.

A few of the twenty of us had a fear of heights, some of water,

public speaking, etc and by the end of the week we helped

each other overcome our fears through different strategies

that we were taught over the week.
We each had different ways and reasons for being at the camp

and together we all got along so, so well,

and we all have beautiful friendships to take away from it.
For me, personally, I especially took away being

open and expressive about my feelings and not being afraid to say “I’m scared”

as I am about living away from home.

The people in my group were so supportive and encouraging

I don’t have a fear of heights or public speaking or any other activities,

but I wanted to make myself overcome a fear-

so I decided I’d stand on a horizontal log ten metres high and do a handstand!

It was only after that that I decided I really am crazy!

It took me a few minutes but I finally did do it thanks

to the encouragement of all my peers,

they truly are amazing, and I can’t imagine my life now without having gone on the camp.

I feel very reassured that Rotary clubs

like yourselves are encouraging youths like me to go on

these camps because they’re so worthwhile.

We all spent the week saying how great each moment was,

as we all got closer and learnt about ourselves as well as each other.

I really do hope that you continue to support young people,

we have all learnt so much from this experience.
Finally I’d like to say thank you for sending me to RYLA

, I can’t describe my experience there in words

, it’s just in the confidence I have gained

and the smile on my face as I am writing this to you.

L’Attitude 28
Last week was an out of venue meeting for partners

and guests at L’Attitude 28 on Chapman Road, Bluff Point
The night began with finger food in the main reception area

before wandering down to an amazing cellar,

one which you would only dream about.

Charles and Joan Smith, sculptors of the HMAS Sydney Memorial

joined us once again and it is always a pleasure to have their company.

Charles gave the club an update of the 5th Element

and what we would expect once we received

enough funding and proceed with the project.
Many thanks to our Cellar Master & host Andrew from L’Attitude 28

who spoke about the various types of wine available

and the best way how to serve and decant.

Wandering though the cellar afterwards was more than tempting,

especially the amazing Grange Hermitage one very decadent drop!

Smile!!!!

Benny worked at the Museum of Unlikely Artifacts,

and his job was to keep all of the exhibits clean and polished.

One day he happened to be dusting around the Arabian exhibit,

and he noticed an ancient urn that needed some cleaning.

He got out his dust rag and began polishing.

Lo and behold, an enormous genie appeared before him.
“Master,” the genie began,

“I am the genie of the urn. I can grant you three wishes,

but there is one condition I will put on you

— you must never shave again for the rest of your life,

or you will be forced to live inside the urn forever.”

Benny thought about it for a bit,

and decided it was a fair condition for three wishes.

So Benny wished for a billion dollars in a Swiss bank account,

which was promptly granted.

Later he wished for the woman of his dreams, and he was married to her.

Finally, he wished for fame and fortune, which came to him,

and he was regarded as a worldwide celebrity.
In the meantime, Benny’s beard became longer and longer,

and it started to itch.

He tried to ignore it, but with every passing year the itch got worse.

Finally he decided he had to get rid of the beard once and for all.

Having shaved it off, he lost everything he wished for,

and instantly he was, himself,

trapped in the urn to stay there forever.
The moral of the story:

A Benny shaved is a Benny urned.
