Carnarvon Flood Relief
Request from Rotary Club of Carnarvon
The Rotary Club of Carnarvon is seeking money donations
to assist with the flood recovery effort in Carnarvon.
The following is the advice going from the Club direct to those Clubs
that have previously advised Carnarvon that they wish to help.
There may be other Clubs that wish to assist with donations
now that Carnarvon has called for help.
“On Monday evening the sub committee of the Carnarvon Club
met to discuss what we felt the club could do to help flood victims here,
with the assistance of donations from clubs elsewhere in WA.
One of our members has been working with FESA assisting people
in need of assistance with businesses and other general enquiries.
We feel there will be some folk who have not asked for help of any kind,
and it is hoped that we will be able to do something for them.
We have to tread gently here of course, respecting their pride and their privacy.
A number of southern Rotary Clubs have mentioned
that they would like to assist sporting groups and we are happy to do this.
We will have an application form prepared,
advertise and ask sporting clubs to apply.
Rotary will assess each application as it comes in.
As you can imagine quite a number of the facilities
here are under water (still) or washed away.
We are prepared to admit that there could well be other ways
in which we can assist flood victims and we will keep abreast of things as they unfold.
Certainly as things progress insurance claims
and other financial issues will become much more apparent.
Rotary hopes to be able to help here too.
On the weekend of the 12/13th February the Rotary Club
is going to Gascoyne Junction with two aims.
One, to clean up what we can in the town.
It looks like a war zone there and it is all very sad.
Following the clean up we are going to prepare a 'town breakfast'
for those who have stayed on and are coping under very trying circumstances.
I am sure we will discover that there is something more we can do for these folk too.
A suggestion has been made that we produce FLOOD BOXES -
rather along the lines of a Shelterbox, but smaller.
The box will contain things such as matches, gas burners and cylinders,
first aid kit, folding pots and a few basic pieces of cutlery,
a sharp knife, insect repellent, torches
and anything else deemed essential.
Members of the club have spoken to a number of people
who were marooned by the flood waters on the roof of their home/shed
or whatever for several nights.
The SES dropped them food parcels, but as they had no way of preparing a meal,
they had to sit patiently until the flood waters fell,
to enable them to get to the ground and consider food
and whatever else necessary.
As well as plantation people along the river,
there would be a need for such boxes by people living in houses attached
to their business and even some of the folk on the outskirts of the town itself.
Pastoral families could also benefit from such a BOX.
We will now begin researching the cost of preparing a flood box
This decision will not help right now, but we will issue the BOXES to everyone
that FESA feels would benefit and keep a stock pile
to circulate if there is ever another disaster
We are listening and talking and treading gently still,
and will keep all clubs posted of progress made.
If your club is still interested in assisting the folk of Carnarvon
can you please send your donations
to a special bank account for this purpose.

Waist Disposal Challenge

Good Afternoon Champions,
Thank you to all the Champions that have been busy weighing their club members
and updating the WDC website in the New Year.
With the joint District Conference just one weigh-in away,
the January 2011 Leaderboard certainly shows that anyone
can be taking ‘Waist’ Disposal Challenge Trophy back to their clubs!
Please take note of the important information at the bottom of this email.
Let’s see how Rotary Clubs went in trying to fend off the temptations of the festive season:
· The January Leaderboard shows very interesting results,
with clubs being very small percentages away from taking top positions.
The Rotary Club of Manjimup is holding onto 1st spot in January.
Congratulations!
· Not too far behind in 2nd position is the Rotary Club of Mt Lawley.
Well done.
· The competition is VERY close with the Rotary Club of Albany Port in 3rd place
and Darling Range in 4th position.
· The clubs with the most members losing weight is
the Rotary Clubs of Manjimup and Joondalup with both clubs achieving 83%
of their members having lost some weight since the start of the WDC.
WOW!!
· There are now 4 clubs that have between 80-90% of their members losing weight.
Well done to the Rotary Clubs of Manjimup (83%),
Joondalup (83%),
Fremantle (83%)
and Darling Range (80%).
· 6 clubs - Dalkeith, Mt Lawley, Albany Port, Geraldton North, Subiaco
and Ballajura-Malaga has between 70-80% of their club members losing weight!
· 7 clubs are on the list of clubs that had between 60-70%
of their members losing weight since the beginning of the WDC.
These include; Freshwater Bay, Matilda Bay, Pinjarra, South-Perth Burswood,
Kalgoorlie, Osborne Park, and Wanneroo.
· The average % of members losing weight between all participating Rotary Clubs is 57%.
· In total we have 793 participating Rotarians and a combined effort
by all Rotary Clubs have achieved 666.5kg of ‘waist’ lost!
· Welcome to the Rotary Club of Perth, it’s their first time on the Leaderboard
and welcome to the Rotary Club of Canning Bridge
who will be having their first weigh-in next week!
· More information can be viewed at: www.waistdisposalchallenge.com.au
· IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
The ‘Waist’ Disposal Trophy will be presented to the winning club
on Sunday the 27th of March at the Joint District Conference.
· We will be using the February 2011 Leaderboard
to determine the club that has the biggest decrease in BMI.
Please update your club’s BMI data by Monday the 7th of March
to be included in the Leaderboard –
every little bit makes a difference!
For the interest of long term health maintenance and the well-being of Rotarians,
we will continue to monitor the BMI Competition
after the Joint District Conference.
Champions will be consulted on this decision soon after.
· The WDC Team has put in funding submissions
to the Australian Government to provide Rotarians with Level 3 of the WDC:
The Telephone Lifestyle Coaching Service for higher risk participants.
We will advise you of this progress.
· We are looking forward to seeing how the next leaderboard
will rally up leading to the conference!
Thank you for helping to make a difference to the lives of Fellow Rotarians!

SMILE!!!

A lion was getting married.
At his wedding was a mouse shouting away and congratulating the lion.
"All the best, my brother. Good luck."
Seeing the mouse shouting away claiming that the lion getting married is his brother,
another Lion grabs the mouse in anger and asks:
"Who the hell do you think you are?
How can a lion be your brother?
You are only a mouse."
The mouse replies:
"I, too, was a lion before I got married."
