Rotaractors make a splash for Australian charity
By Megan Ferringer Rotary International News -- 8 March 2011

By swimming thousands of miles in their annual Splash for Cash swim-a-thons,
Rotaractors in Australia have helped raise more than US$557,300
to aid children with severe sensory impairments.
Started in 1984 as a joint venture between Rotaract clubs in District 9680
and the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children,
Splash for Cash has become one of Australia’s longest-running fundraising events.
In its first year, 40 swimmers raised nearly $10,000 for the institute.
Since then, the event has attracted more than 200 participants each year.
During the 28th annual Splash in April,
the Rotaractors aim to raise $100,000.
Swimmers and teams receive sponsorships for the number of laps
they complete during the event, held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Center.
All funds raised from the sponsors go directly to the institute's Teleschool,
which provides educational programs to children with hearing
or visual impairments in remote areas of Australia.
"My club is always very supportive of each other’s passions.
What began as an event to participate in soon became an annual event
to challenge each other to raise as much money as we can," says Krissie Bredin,
past president of the Rotaract Club of Crosslands.
The institute "is now easily the organization that has benefited
the most from the work of our club."
In 2010, Bredin swam 342 laps for the cause.
To up the ante this year, she will be swimming with blacked-out goggles
to call attention to the challenges that blind children face daily.
Bredin says Splash for Cash was a major reason she joined Rotaract in 2006.
The popularity of the event has helped her club’s membership quadruple
since 2008 and strengthened its reputation within the community.
"If you told me five years ago that I would raise tens of thousands of dollars
for my favorite charities [through Rotaract projects],
I wouldn’t have believed it," says Bredin.
"With the support of my fellow Rotaractors,
we will keep taking the world by storm."
Evan Burrell, district Rotaract representative,
says delegates from the district will attend the 2011 RI Convention
in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, to promote Splash for Cash
and encourage other districts to adapt it for their own use.
Like the young Australians, Rotaractors worldwide are involved in their communities.
Each year, World Rotaract Week honors the chartering
of the first Rotaract club in 1968.
Rotaractors this year can decide the best way for their club
to celebrate the program by completing one, two,
or an entire week’s worth of activities 7-13 March.
After the club has completed its commemorative events,
the sponsor Rotary club or district Rotaract chair
can download a certificate of recognition

The Perth Rotaract Club has a project called Sandgropers
where they will be hosting 6 Rotorac-tors for two weeks in April.
This project is modelled on similar events in Europe
and is the very first of its kind in Australia.
The aim is to build upon interna-tional relations,
learn from a mix of Rotaract clubs, promote WA tourism -
and have a great time!
Mem-bers would love to hear from any club with meetings
or events that may be of interest to visiting Rotorac-tors;
they will be in our District from !8th-21st April.
Information can be sent to rotaract.perthcbd@gmail.com

I got a bunch of roses from God today”
– the Anatomy of a Project
“I got a bunch of roses from God today”
. When I asked Shirley what she meant she said that someone had said yes
to help with our project.
In fact Shirley received lots of roses to send a shipping container
full of donated books from Manjimup, Western Australia to Ramu, Papua New Guinea.
The Ramu community of 10,000 people needed a resource centre
and the Seventh Day Adventist Church took the initiative to build and stock it.
They formed a partnership with their sister Church in Manjimup
which in turn approached Rotary and others to help collect and ship books.
We said yes too.
Rotary in WA District 9460 had previously sent six containers
of books to Africa in seven years and our contacts were still available.
Shirley’s group purchased a container and discovered
that its certification for shipping was only valid for three months.
Get a move on!
We filled it in two months.
The logistics to acquire, fill and move a shipping container were daunting.
Equivalent to AU$9,000 was needed and it took 1000 standard sized cartons of books.
Shirley and her fellow Adventists sold a lot of apple juice which,
together with donations, funded shipping out of Fremantle.
The container left port in October 2010 and arrived in Lae one month later.
It took another two months to complete Lae formalities with more costs;
shipping agent fees, stevedore fees, custom agent fees, quarantine inspection fees,
PNG Ports storage fees, PNG Customs GST and import duties, and transport costs.
The Ramu community had raised AU$4,900 only to find that they were well short.
Fortunately our Rotary involvement also secured significant
PNG cost exemptions and Ramu has its books.
The shipment was valued at AU$23,000 and because of generosity on both sides
of the Torres Strait had manageable handling costs.
Thousands of people in and around Ramu now have a library to help them with reading.
What a wonderful thing.
Many Rotary clubs in WA sourced books and Adventists
did a lot of travelling to collect, deliver, sort and pack them.
Shirley received more that a bunch of roses from God with this project.
Given the infinite benefits of being able to read,
I think she has established a rose garden.

Storm the Stage is a Youth inspired project,
established by and inaugurated by the Rotary Club of Cannington in 2003.
The project has provided an avenue for young people (aged 16 to 19 years)
to showcase their talent in front of a large audience,
after performing in heats, finals and be on stage in a National Grand Final.
Each person who enters can perform a Monologue Drama piece
and or a song from a recognized musical.
Many hundreds have enjoyed this opportunity since
the first event in 2004 to the 7th in 2010.
Claire Lovering; a National Grand Final winner in the Drama section,
went on to study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)
and is now performing with our premier WA theatre company; The Black Swan Theatre.
There has been many other successful outcomes for winners and Finalists.
Patrons and supporters of Storm the Stage are Hugh Jackman and Jill Perryman.
The National Committee for Storm the Stage
resides in Perth and relies on contacts with Rotary Club
representatives in each of the other States.
The committee is primarily made up of Rotarians
from the Rotary Clubs of Cannington and Melville.
Members from other Clubs and from the performing arts community,
are encouraged to be part of this exciting project.
Learn more by inviting a member of the committee
to come to your Club as a guest speaker.

"Quote of the Week"

Dad is from the old school, where you keep your money under the mattress -
only he kept his in the underwear drawer.
One day I bought my dad an unusual personal safe,
a can of spray paint with a false bottom
so he could keep his money in the workshop.
Later I asked Mom if he was using it.
"Oh, yes," she replied
, "he put his money in it the same day."
"No burglar would think to look on the work shelf!" I gloated.
"They won't have to," my mom replied
"He keeps the paint can in his underwear drawer."

How Much Do You Really Know about Golf?
This is multiple choice.
If you select a wrong answer,
the ball moves only so far down the fairway and stops....
and you are charged with one stroke.
Keep selecting the answers that you think are correct
and the ball moves down the fairway until you get the right answer
and the ball goes in the hole.
If you have the correct answer right away,
the ball goes directly in the hole - a hole in one.
To play
