August is Membership and Retention Month

August, Membership and Extension Month,
is an ideal time to discuss membership strategies for the year.
The Presidential Citation and Changemaker Award both include membership criteria
and are excellent resources to help you set your goals.
Clubs aiming for the Presidential Citation this year must add at least one new member
and keep at least 85 percent of their membership.
Additional goals include recruiting RI and Rotary Foundation program alumni
and young professionals, and increasing diversity by adding more female members.
 Districts must meet similar goals.
The Changemaker Award, established by RI President Kalyan Banerjee,
also puts membership in the spotlight.
Clubs must achieve a specific set of club service goals,
including adding one new member under the age of 40 for each 50 members,
implementing a comprehensive strategy for keeping members,
and demonstrating that they have retained 85 percent of their members
for the three Rotary years ending with 2011-12..
Both recognitions also include criteria for supporting Foundation programs,
crucial to Rotary’s continued global success.

Around the Clubs

Over the weekend of August 6th and 7th,
a large group of Rotarians from the City,
a group of Rotarians from Quairading in the Wheatbelt,
and 21 schoolchildren from Churchlands Primary School planted
around 6,000 trees in a previously salinated area outside Quairading.
On the Friday, the kids travelled up from the city by coach,
had an introduction to the town and the area,
and a barbeque in the evening followed by a night's sleep in the town's Primary school.
Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Subiaco enjoyed great fellowship
with their colleagues from the Rotary Club of Quairading at a dinner at the town club.
On Saturday, everyone arose to a beautiful day,
which helped to make the weekend a great success.
Joined by Rotarians from Matilda Bay and Heirisson,
the morning was spent planting trees; one adult was 'assigned' to 3 kids,
thereby ensuring a quality experience for the kids
and helping them to learn about the environment and the countryside.
 The children departed for Perth at lunchtime;
this enavled the Rotarians and friends to enjoy a bush barbeque,
with plenty of fellowship, before planting the remaining trees in the afternoon.
A Casserole dinner was held at the sports club on Saturday night,
and a breakfast for all on the Sunday morning.
A most succesful weekend, providing a learning and outdoor experience for the children,
an opportunity to improve the environment and a quality fellowship experience for the adults.

ROTARY BULLETIN ON ART SHOW 2011
Following a fantastic effort by Rotarians from Applecross and Melville
to set up and run the Art Show and the camaraderie
 that a combined operation brings,
the Art Show succeeded in selling 57 paintings
and generating in the order of $19,000 worth of sales.
The Artists, the viewing public and Rotarians considered that the Art Show
was a great success and attracted additional patrons for the Shopping Centre.
We are fortunate that AMP, who run Garden City Shopping Centre,
see our Rotary Art Show as an important part of their public activities
and continue to offer great support.
A number of Artists were rewarded with their first public sales
and all enjoyed viewing each others creative works.
Prior to the Art Show the screens and stands were given a birthday
and the whole exhibit generated praise from the Shopping Centre personnel.
As Director, I thank all those involved.
We are now in the process of making payments to successful Artists
and will shortly be able to report on the balance of funds
and the distribution to the Rotary Club of Melville and the Rotary Club of Applecross.
Thank you all again for an enjoyable club activity.

Rotary Club of Matilda Bay
My husband Dave Liddiard and father John Lindsay
are members of the Matilda Bay Rotary Club,
and dad suggested I contact you for advice.
I’m hoping to approach all of the metropolitan based Rotary Clubs
for support in spreading the word about a charitable event on the 10th of September,
 the Burns Challenge Ball.
The aim of the ball is fundraising for burns research with Fiona Wood
(a burns surgeon and former Australian of the Year],
who was also awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship
a few years ago by the Matilda Bay Rotary Club ).
The ball was excellent fun last year combining a sporting challenge theme
with the usual meal and dancing,
and had the involvement of some well known athletes like Luc Longley the basketballer.
It’s a black tie affair but attendees can wear runners
if they want to which makes it a bit different from other balls!
I’m actually involved because I worked in burns as an occupational therapist at Royal Perth.
With enough funding, Fiona and her team of researchers
have very real potential to improve the quality of the outcome for burns patients,
and reduce the pain and suffering they experience during their recovery.
She was heavily involved in the treatment of the Bali bombing survivors.
I’m hoping to ask the president or secretary of each metro Rotary Club
if they could mention the ball at one of their meetings in the next few weeks.
It would be a huge help if they could encourage members to either get together
and form a club table if they like attending balls
, or if they prefer not to attend, to instead pass the word around in their workplaces
or with friends to get a table together.
Please feel free to reply to Ivana, the event organizer
 at ivana@gravyevents.com.au, or on 0402 107 098 .
She will be happy to speak to you I’m sure.
I really appreciate anything you can do to help,
Kind regards,
Katrina Liddiard

Rotary Club of Mill Point

South Perth based Mill Point Rotary Club are embarking on a really big fundraising project.
They are attempting to reignite some spark into the heart of Perth
and have ambitiously planned the first annual BHP Billiton Ramble for October 9th.
Described as a cross between the ‘Amazing Race’ and a treasure hunt,
the Ramble is expecting to see thousands of competitors hit the streets of Perth
in the name of fun and charity.
More about brains than brawn, teams will use foot power
and public transport to uncover hidden checkpoints at iconic landmarks
and quirky locations across the city where they’ll solve puzzles and challenges.
The event is accessible to everyone and will have a wheel chair-friendly course.
Designed to attract families, friends, university students and corporations,
it’s going to be a big day.
Funds raised will benefit Australian Rotary Health and Telethon.
The BHP Billiton Ramble will begin from Forrest Place in the centre of Perth on October 9th.
Rotary Clubs of Western Australia are encouraged to help spread
the word about this terrific event as well as to join in the fun
and enter a team at www.rotaryramble.com
.

Get your team together and have some fun!!!!!

My Rotary Journey cont’d

Monday 8th August I attended Whyalla Norrie Rotary Club in South Australia.
They met at the City Pearl Chinese Restaurant,
with past Secretary and President Shirley Gaff welcoming me.
They had had their changeover the week previous and all were in new positions for this meeting.
A very welcoming group of 15 with 4 Apologies.
I was to learn the next night at Port Lincoln that this Club had four members
less than 2 years ago and had grown to 20!
As there meeting was structured around a board meeting with no guest speaker
they invited me to speak for 5-10 minutes, which I did.
Their main community activity supports Food Bank Whyalla
donating cash quarterly and carrying out a 3 monthly stock take.
The ‘yellow boat road’ was also highlighted.
I was presented with a banner which proudly hangs in the Van
. I in return presented them with the Rotary Club of East Perth banner
and welcomed any of them to our Wednesday Breakfast meeting if in Perth
. One Rotarian will be in Victoria Park in September visiting her father,
so may take up the invite, if not now when she returns in February.
Shirley, husband David and two other couples will be in Perth Feb-Mar 2012
and have taken my card to contact.
Tuesday 9th August – I arrived at Port Lincoln and 5pm after a 450k journey
to find on the Notice Board that Port Lincoln Rotary Club met at 6pm for 6.30pm
 – I phoned the given number and left a message that I would be there.
They met at the very new and well supported Playford Sports Club.
There was AFL football, hockey, soccer training happening
at the various sports fields surrounding the Club – very active community.
In the Rotary Meeting room I found it was ladies night with the District Govenor Eric ??
as guest speaker
There were 8 tables of 8 plus the head table of 8 – approx. 64 in attendance.
They have 61 members, 17 of whom are off doing the grey nomad travels.
I sat at a table of Rotarians and wives who made me most welcome.
They were also supporting new exchange student Marilyn from Paris France,
being hosted by Rotarian David Gillies and wife Dianne,
who also invited me to park Bettee Blue at their 5 acre property. They were wonderful hosts.
The Club is preparing for welcoming the Yellow Boat Road Travellers
this coming weekend and Rotarian Ian spoke of the progress of eradicating Polio.
The travellers have raised $140,000.00 with the GE explaining the further needs.
There was discussion of getting Young members back by starting
with those who had gone through as exchange or supported students.
A cry heard at most Rotary meetings, we are all aging!
I gave a banner and again invited those in Perth of a Wednesday to our breakfast meeting.
I know I miss the breakfast meetings! Best wishes to all….
Leaving Port Lincoln today and meandering through central Eyre Peninsular
hoping to be at Wallaroo or Kadina for their Tuesday Rotary Meeting
before then meandering the York Peninsular….
Another different, formal, yet happy meeting of Rotarians
 and another tremendous experience.
Jude

On a lighter note

Unlike many tales of this ilk, this occurred not in a bar but in a restaurant.
A frequent patron noted that another frequent customer was a brown-robed, bare-footed monk.
Every day, the monk would come in and order the lunch special.
And, every day, the waitress would charge him only half price.
While he could appreciate the courtesy accorded to a man of the cloth,
the patron felt there was a certain unfairness involved, so he complained.
He was somewhat mollified when the waitress explained that the monk
was a member of the restaurant’s frequent friar program.

I heard my wife mention one morning while getting ready for church.
"I sure need some new stockings."
When she went into the bakery on the way home that afternoon,
I spied a clothing store next door.
So, I thought I would surprise her,
and went in to buy her some new stockings..
. "Can I help you?" the sales lady asked.
"Yes," I replied.
"I would like to get some stockings for my wife, please."
"Sheer?" she asked.
"No, she ain't here," I replied. "She's next door at the bakery."

  1. Nice start guys...I went through the website and I found that you made decent point here. Keep up the topic that everyone can choose one of the best. Thanks.

  2. I'm really loving the theme/design of your web site. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility issues? A handful of my blog readers have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera. Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem?

  3. Heya! I realize this is sort of off-topic but I needed to ask.

Does building a well-established website like yours take a lot
of work? I'm completely new to writing a blog but I do write in my diary everyday. I'd like
to start a blog so I can share my personal experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or tips for brand new aspiring
    blog owners. Thankyou!

  4. I think that what you wrote made a lot of sense. But, what about thiѕ?
what if you added a little information? I mean,
I ԁon't wish to tell you how to run your blog, but suppose you added a post title that grabbed people's аttentіοn?

I mеan Untіtled is kinda vanilla. You
might glance at Yаhoо's front page and see how they write post titles to get people to open the links. You might add a related video or a pic or two to get readers excited about everything've
writtеn. In my оpinion, it could bring your posts a lіttlе lіνеlіer.

  5. I don't know if it's just me or if perhaps everyone else
experiencing problems with your site. It looks like some of the text within
your posts are running off the screen. Can someone else
please provide feedback and let me know if this is happening to them too?
This could be a issue with my browser because I've had this happen previously. Cheers

  6. An intriguing discussion is worth comment. I think that you should write more on
this subject, it might not be a taboo matter but generally people don't discuss such topics. To the next! All the best!!
