November is Rotary Foundation Month

#############

Rotary clubs around the world are pledging emergency aid
to communities in central Philippines after last week’s
massive typhoon flattened entire coastal towns and villages,
 killed thousands of people,
and displaced nearly 600,000 more.
The situation remains dire as widespread destruction has made food, water,
and medicine scarce in remote areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan,
the strongest storm to make landfall on record.
Rotary President Ron Burton is urging our 34,000 clubs
worldwide to continue to assist storm victims.
"I know we all want to help.
I am urging our clubs to take action to provide emergency aid now
and begin planning for the future when we can help
rebuild homes, schools, and businesses," says Burton.
"We are in the business of helping people in need."
Rotary partner ShelterBox has committed aid
for 4,000 families in the form of emergency shelter and other relief assistance.
Such disasters are
“exactly why we entered into our partnership with ShelterBox,”
says Burton.
“It gives Rotary members worldwide the opportunity to respond immediately
and in a very meaningful way to the life-threatening
conditions faced by the people of the Philippines.”
For nearly 100 years,
Rotary clubs in the Philippines have been creating positive
 change in their communities.
The first Philippine Rotary club was formed in Manila in 1919.
Today, more than 800 Rotary clubs throughout the Philippines
give members the chance to make a difference at home and around the globe.

'The closer you get to the path of the typhoon the greater the destruction.

You can go from little or no damage
to 95% of everything being completely obliterated.
It is this amount of destruction
we are expecting from the worst hit areas.'

A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) have been in transit
Northwards to Bantayn Islands (north of Cebu Island).
These are some of the more remote communities worst
 affected by the typhoon damage.
Many of these communities have been overlooked until now
in terms of the aid effort,
with other aid agencies focusing their initial assessments around Tacloban City.

the remote island of Banyatan. ‘All the power is out. The port is busy with people bringing supplies back from Cebu. Roofs missing, trees felled, power lines down. It’s getting worse as we go North.’ Simon managed to send back the below image of the team’s equipment as he was waiting for a boat to Banyaton. Included is a ShelterBox disaster relief tent – shelter for a family in the Philippines who have lost everything following the storm.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of a generation,
 polio has been 99% eradicated.

to the ongoing efforts of more than 1 million Rotarians
, change has been made by an extraordinary collection
of ordinary individuals who dared
to dream the dream of a world without polio.

Now, with just 1% to go,
Brendan Walker has signed up to do his part
in the colossal quest to end this disease.

“If I was a rich bloke,” he says,
“I’d make a big donation to help out.
But I’m not, so I thought, what can I do?”

The answer he came up with was a daring world record attempt:
an epic journey from Perth to Sydney…
 on a kick scooter!

The End of Polio is proud to partner with Brendon
 as he traverses the country,
raising money and awareness for polio eradication.

Join us in throwing your full support behind Brendon
and his Push for Polio
For the cost of a coffee or a beer at your local pub,
you can ensure 21 children are vaccinated against polio,

2014

Changes for 2014
Our Rotary Team Challenge event will be a one day event  on Saturday 12th April 2014.  We will have a staggered start for the cyclists, runners and walkers so that hopefully everyone finishes in a bunch at the end of the day.  This will make it easier for the cyclists as they will not need to get to Northam until a bit later in the day with the running teams starting at 6.00am but the cycling teams only starting at 11.00am.

The shorter course options will start from Bakers Hill (50kms) and Chidlow (22kms) with walkers leaving from Bakers Hill at 6.00am, running teams at 9.00am and mountain bikers at 1.00pm.  Walking teams starting from Chidlow will depart at 12.00 midday, runners at 2.00pm and mountain bikers at 3.30pm.

The staggered starts will also make the finish more of a celebration and we are arranging for a number of food and drink stalls and entertainment to be at the finish at the old Swan View Railway Station.  We are also pleased to welcome back our wonderful podiatrists and physiotherapist from this year's event as well as the masseurs from Perth Integrated Health.

Our entry fees for the event are $120 per person for the 75km and 50km events and $60 per person for the 20km event but we have a Early Bird Special of $99 pp for the longer events and $49 pp for the short course.

Once again all funds raised by the teams will go the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA and we are asking the teams to set a fund raising target of $1,000 per team.  The teams in our inaugural event raised over $37,500 - an average of $2,678 per team so although $1,000 may sound a lot it is achievable.  There are a number of ideas on the website to assist you with fund raising

If this doesn't make you smile..nothing will

A group of acrobats from Pamplona
in the Navarre province in northern Spain
were invited to the United States.
They had never even been to Madrid,
let alone a big city like New York before,
and were naturally quite excited by it.
The pro-ducer, who had discovered them
while vacationing in the Spanish countryside,
wanted the acrobats to enjoy all New York had to offer,
so he made certain that they missed noth-ing.
They stayed at a fine midtown hotel, ate at the best restau-rants
, visited the museums
 and the Statue of Liberty.

But the acrobats' favorite things in New York
were not these passive sight-seeing pleasures.
They preferred the action of the rickety wooden roller coaster
at Coney Island which provided thrills they only dreamed existed.

The subway ride back to midtown
(because of course they eschewed the limo provided by our producer)
 was even more exhilarating.
But the biggest thrill of all came that evening
when they were taken to a restaurant
which was entered through a revolving door.
This was more exciting than either the roller coaster
or the subway, and they all crowded in
and twirled around and around.
Faster, and faster the revolving door spun-
until there was a giant pileup
and, alas! they were all crushed to death.

The moral of all this is
: You should never put all your Basques in one exit.

Find the Leopard??

As an animal lover
I thought you might want to pick up some additional knowledge.

 CROW KILLS
Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority
found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently,
and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu.
A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows,
and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu.
The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted
that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws.
By analyzing these paint residues it was determined
that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks,
while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine
if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages
of truck kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause:
 When crows eat road kill,
they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree
 to warn of impending danger.
They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah",
not a single one could shout "Truck."
