More than 18,000 Rotary members from over 150 countries
will be in Sydney, Australia, 1-4 June
for the 2014 Rotary International Convention.
The convention is bringing together some of the world's leading experts
on water, polio, and social media.
Follow all of the action by signing into My Rotary,
and through the following:

-----------

Nancy Hughes, a widow who might have been expected to enjoy
a quiet retirement with an occasional cruise on a calendar,
has instead joined the effort to address
one of the world’s single biggest problems:
poor people in the developing world are killing themselves
and their children cooking over open fires
while deforesting the planet in the bargain.

 Working with her Rotary club,
Nancy has established a nonprofit organization called
Stove Team International that built seven factories in five countries
to manufacture clean burning wood stoves that require less
than half as much wood and produce no visible smoke,
 68% less particulate matter
and 85% less carbon emission.
Because the stoves are locally produced,
they create quality jobs in communities that desperately need them.
Almost 45,000 stoves have been produced so far,
but that is a drop in the bucket compared with the
estimated need of six million stoves in Guatemala alone.

Stove Team TISI -0.87% International was recognized for its work
by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
 Stove Team notes that,
“The most dangerous activity a woman can undertake in the developing world
is cooking for her family.”
The indoor air pollution is believed to cause 4 million deaths per year.
Not only is the indoor air pollution resulting from the stoves devastating
to the health of mother and children,
but the some estimates suggest that 4 million burns
occur each year associated with cooking fires.
The scale of indoor cooking fires generates
one billion tons of greenhouse gases each year
 and contributes dramatically to deforestation.

Neighbours helping Neighbours

Once again the Rotary Give a Damn Give a Can
collection in the Fremantle area has been an outstanding success.
Our pink carpet in the park grew even larger.
  This year the combined collections from Fremantle Rotary;
Attadale Rotary and Cockburn Rotary came to a huge total
of approximately 15,000 items from the areas targeted.
And those bags collected were full – and I mean really full –
we averaged at least 5 items per bag.
And they are still coming in.
 THANK YOU SO MUCH

People have been very generous and have allowed
 us to provide large donations of food to help our four main beneficiaries;
St Pats; The Salvos; Anglicare and Uniting Care West provide meals
and care packages for needy families.
The recipients were all delighted with their share but with bags
coming in after the event we have also been able to assist
the Woman’s Refuge; Communicare and the Graham Maybury Appeal.

Rotarians, families and friends from the three Clubs
plus student assistance from several schools
and the local Scout Troop helped with feet on the street
for the collection; the rain stayed away at the vital time
and we were able to enjoy a sausage sizzle and cold drink afterwards.
Many thanks to every one involved and to our collection depots
 so generously provided by :
Shacks Holden Fremantle; Pharmacist Advice Silas Street;
Gerald Burns Pharmacy Melville Plaza; Banovich Pharmacy South Fremantle
and Hilton 777 Pharmacy on South Street.

If you would like to be involved next year
or would like further information about Rotary
please check the web site of the Club in your area
or call 0409201300 for more information.

The Genius that is Charlie Chaplin

A lady opened her refrigerator and saw a rabbit sitting on one of the shelves.
“What are you doing in there?” She asked.

The rabbit replied: “This is a Westinghouse, isn’t it?”
To which the lady replied “Yes.”
“Well,” the rabbit said,

“I’m westing.”
