Rotary Club of Swan Distri

We are very proud of Head of Science Bill Offer,
who has been honoured by the Swan Districts Rotary Club with a Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Rotary members surprised Mr Offer at this morning's assembly
 - here's what they had to say about the award:
"The award is in recognition of Mr Offer's efforts in selecting and mentoring students
towards nomination to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)
 in Canberra each year.
In a partnership with Swan Districts Rotary spanning over a decade Helena College
has averaged a selection of two outstanding young students each year
to attend the NYSF in Canberra.
This is an outstanding achievement and reflects highly of Mr Offer,
the science department and the high academic standards
 in place at Helena College."
Mr Offer says he's honoured by the award,
and the standing ovation he received from his fellow staff members at the assembly.

Rotary Foundation Chair Brad Martin and President Tony Muse
honored Lauren Darge, our GRSP (Georgia Rotary Student Program)
Georgia Gwinnett College student from Perth, Australia,
as a Paul Harris Fellow for the fine qualities she has displayed
during her academic year with us.
From the delightful recap of her experiences and the insights she gained,
which she also presented to Duluth Rotarians this morning,
Lauren, no doubt, will be a wonderful goodwill ambassador
 wherever life takes her.

Sister Amelia Whitely

Many Northam residents will be sad to learn
of the passing of Sister Aemelia Whiteley, last week.
Her funeral will be held at Karrakatta on Friday at 1215pm.
following a Church service at Shelley, at 1030.
Sr Aemelia a member of the congregation of St Joseph of the Apparition
which taught for over a century at Northam,
was one of the last Nuns to reside in Northam.
Sr Aemelia also claims membership of the Rotary Club of Northam,
perhaps the first Nun to ever be a Rotarian.
(from her photo can be seen no less than five Rotary badges,
 the Rotary centenary 1905-2005 square badge;
with Angels and a boomerang badge alongside)
Sr Aemelia was a well known identity, performing community work
especially Friday nights visiting Hotels etc.
, assisting the disabled and disadvantaged.
Later she would be enlisting aid of youth to search bins
and take the ring pulls from drink cans.
The community of St Joseph in particular has
a great awareness of this lady,
but the whole community in the early 2000s
would have had contact with her.
For the past 4 years Sr Aemelia has been a resident of aged care facility,
 Margaret Hubery House, Shelley.

Kalgoorlie born and raised she is survived by a brother.

with the “Days for Girls” project.
We have just completed our latest commitment of 100 quality,

This year’s packs will be distributed to girls in Laos.
Funds are raised by holding a High Tea in the Swan Valley in October.
Profits come from donated raffle prizes, and go towards purchasing material
and supplies to make up the packs.
Volunteers for the three sewing days come from friends
and family of Rotary, including Inner Wheel.

Contact numbers for Swan Valley Rotary,
