The Aboriginal Reference Group was established

by Rotary District 9455 in 2008.

Its purpose has been to facilitate Aboriginal projects

being conducted by Clubs.

Its specific aims are to collaborate with Clubs and Aboriginal

communities at the local level:

· To build respect for the heritage and culture of Aboriginal people;

· To foster engagement and relationships with Aboriginal people;

· To listen to what Aboriginal people want;

· To work together and take actions in genuine partnership;

· To provide guidelines to Clubs so that they can

conduct projects of mutual benefit to ALL Australians; and

· To collaborate with Clubs requiring special expertise.

I have recently sent summations of Club projects to you.

If there is somebody in your Club who may be interested in joining the ARG,

you could refer them to these summations.

I am prepared to make myself available to give interested parties

a comprehensive briefing on what ARG membership involves.

South Perth Rotaractor Samantha Fewster

returns from Indian adventure

TRAVELLING to a foreign country to embark on a road trip

with two strangers might seem crazy,

but it was a first step to igniting global change

for one Kensington resident.

As a member of the philanthropic South Perth Rotaract Club,

Samantha Fewster has always had dreams of changing the world.

When the opportunity for her to travel to India

with its local Rotaract group,

Ms Fewster said she booked as soon as she could.

“India was not on my list of countries to visit,

but the opportunity to go on the trip wasn’t something I could pass up,”

she told Southern Gazette.

“I was asked countless times in the lead up ‘why India?’

and my answer was always

‘to meet the people over there who are helping change the world’.”

Ms Fewster travelled with a Turkish Rotaractor

and local Indian Rotractors throughout the country,

first visiting markets and monuments.

“The young people we met are truly changing the course

of history in India,

through disease prevention, education and blood donation,”

Ms Fewster said.

“After meeting them,

and seeing that is is actually possible to make a change,

I feel more inspired than ever to create a culture

of positive change in South Perth, WA

and then hopefully the world.”

Rotary has clubs all around the world,

but one common goal is to see the complete eradication of polio.

“To be in a country that was only recently declared polio free,

with the last reported case in India from 2011,

and to see how proud the Rotaractors

were was a truly amazing experience,”

Ms Fewster said.

“I hope that now we can eradicate it from Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

Now that Ms Fewster has had time to reflect on her trip,

she said she still felt incredibly inspired by the experience.

“After coming back from the Indian Rotaract tour,

I feel more motivated than ever to put my passion to use,” she said.

“Hearing people my age talk about what they have achieved in India-

like eradicating polio- was a truly amazing part of my trip.

“I have always dreamt of changing the world,

and by joining Rotaract

I feel like I have a chance to make that a reality.”

Bring a Beanie and Sock it to Them

We will be holding our Beanie night on Wednesday 25 May.

The beanies and socks will be donated to the agencies;

St Patrick's, Sista's Place and The Fremantle Doctor

who distribute them to homeless folk out on the streets.

The weather has started to cool down and these items

will go a long way in assisting those less fortunate to keep warm.

Please bring along beanies and socks

and also encourage any knitters to dust off their

needles and knit a beanie or two for a good cause

While on holiday oversea, club member Genevieve Carr

had the opportunity to visit Rotarian Paul Wilson from Grantham in the UK

, the big mastermind behind Rotary Global Swimarathon.

Participated in a mini Swimarathon at Grantham pool

to raise further funds for End Polio Now,

followed by fish and chips supper as part of World's Greatest Meal.

The following evening, had an exchange of banners

between the Rotary Club of Kwinana and the Rotary Club of Grantham Sunrise.

Buddy Benches finished and ready to be presented to schools,

Buddy Benches are being presented to schools for children

who are new, lonely or just need a friend to sit.

Students then know that this child needs a ‘Buddy’

and includes them in their play.
