Rotary Club of Fremantle

Beanie and sock night last Wednesday night was a heart
(and head)warming event.
Members brought along a huge collection of socks and beanies.
Pam and Nola easily won the beanie knitting competition
and came along with bags of handknitted items.
At the end of the night Chris gathered them all up
and took them to various organisations who will distribute.

A huge thank to all who donated and helped last Sunday.
Cars and trucks rolled up last Sunday with boot loads of pink bags
filled up with non perishable food collected by Rotarians and volunteers
for Rotary Give a Can Give a Damn .
Uniting Care West's and Food Bank's trucks were filled
with the desperately needed supplies.
They will distribute them to various locations
 amongst them being a women's refuge .
Participating Rotary clubs were Fremantle, Rossmoyne,
 Attadale and E-WA

Our guest speaker on Wednesday 18th March
was professor Sandra Thompson, Director of Western Australia
Centre for Rural Health (WACRH).

WACRH's main offices are based on Fitzgerald St, in Geraldton.
Commonly known as 'the A frame on top of the hill',
WACRH is located at the heart of the town's education
and medical precinct, and also adjoins
 its student accommodation facilities
 located on Milford Street.
WACRH works to provide professional and student
support and research to outlying communities,
including Mullewa, Three Springs, Mt Magnet, Morawa and Yalgoo.

Christine Curry, Secretary of the Friends of Star Swamp
accepted cheque from President Heather on behalf of our club.
The donation will be used to purchase fine weeding equipment,
which can slide in next to the weeds without damaging other growth.
David Pike spokesman for Friends of Star Swamp,
gave a short update of the recent activities of the Friends.
Secretary Christine was the recipient of an Order of Australia earlier this year.
The Friends are still removing weeds after 45 years.
They can no longer spray as there are plenty of bandicoots
now and the spray is not good for them,
so it is back to hand weeding
.  With forward planning, weeding groups can now be directed
to the areas which most need attention.
Using a spade is not appropriate,
as it can cut the roots of the native plants among the weeds.
Lupins are no longer the only weeds which need removal,
others include bridal veil creeper and carnation weed.

Our Club has a long association with Star Swamp
going back to the construction of the-//
 Henderson Centre, many years ago
